Definitions of Rig and Sail Measurements

Explanations for information requested on the reverse:

"I"             Foretriangle height measured along the foreside of the mast from the main deck datum to the top of the jib halyard sheave. The height of the deck used as datum for "I" measurement shall be taken as 4% of beam above the shear line abreast of the mast. For boats like the CAL28 and MORG27 whose cabin extends athwartships to the shear line, use the stripe along the hull which represents the shear line.

"J"           Distance is measured from the foreside of the mast to point where forestay attaches to deck or bowsprit; in a direction level with the water line.

"P"             Luff length of mainsail from tack to head.

"E"           Foot length of mainsail along boom from tack to clew of sail. In the event the clew of the mainsail is carried below the top of the boom where it intersects the mast, (boom drop), measure the "E" dimension along the slope of the boom.

"H"            Height to top of spinnaker sheave (required only if it is above the jib sheave). Use same deck datum as described for "I" measurement.

% of largest "LP" divided by "J" where "LP" equals the length of the line drawn perpendicular to the luff which headsail            intersects the clew, and "J" equals the dimension described above under "J".

% of largest   Same as described for % largest headsail, except using the stays'l instead of the largest jib.

If you opt to join PHRF, or want a more accurate provisional rating, you'll also need to know the following measurements:

MAINSAIL JIB SPINNAKER
"HB" _____’ _____" "LP" _____’ _____" "LLS" _____’ _____"
"MGM" _____’ _____" "LLJ" _____’ _____" "G" _____’ _____"
"MGU" _____’ _____" "SPL" _____’ _____"
"HB" _____’ _____"

"HB"           Headboard. Measure the maximum fore and aft dimensions from the luff of the mainsail to the aft edge of the leach at the widest part of the headboard.

"MGM"      Mainsail midgirth measurement. Points of measurement are determined by folding the head of the sail to the tack and marking the midpoint of the luff. Fold the head to the clew and mark the midpoint of the leach. Then measure the distance between the luff and leach marks to determine the "MGM".

"MGU"      Mainsail upper girth measurement. The measurement points are determined by folding the head of the sail to the midgirth measurement points and marking the three quarter points for the luff and leach. Then measure between the luff and leach points to determine "MGU".

"LP"          The distance from the clew of the jib to the luff line of the jib in a direction at 90 degrees to the luff line. If in doubt about clew location, project leach and foot to point of intersection.

"LLJ"         The distance from the tack to the head of the jib. If in doubt about the tack and head location, project the luff, foot, or leach to the point of intersection.

"LLS"         The greatest length of spinnaker luff and leach measured around the edges of the sail.

"G"            The girth of the spinnaker. This is the maximum width of the spinnaker, measured from luff to luff, with the spinnaker stretched flat; measured parallel to the foot.

"SPL"        Spinnaker pole length. Shall be the length of the spinnaker pole, when in its fitting on the mast, and set in a horizontal position athwartships, measured from the center line of the yacht to the extreme outboard end of the pole and fittings used when spinnaker is set.
